The Malmesbury tourism area is well-known for its wheat and wine farms. The town originally developed around a tepid sulphur spring and the first farms were allocated in 1703.

The biggest buildings in Malmesbury are for wheat milling and processing wheat products. The headquarters of South Africa's oldest milling company, Bokomo, are located here.
