This site has general information on location, history, attractions, etc for Riebeek Kasteel & Riebeek West, as well as beautiful pictures of the area.
In 1652, under the command of Jan van Riebeek, the VOC establishes a refreshment station at the foot of Table Mountain to provide fresh supplies to ships passing by.
The first vine planted in the Cape was in 1655 in the Company's Garden.
Jan van Riebeek decided to explore the interior north of the Cape to investigate the suitability of that terrain for agriculture purposes.
It was on this expedition in 1661 that Pieter Cruythoff discovered the Riebeek Valley and named it after Jan van Riebeek.
Almost 50 years later, in 1704, Adriaan van der Stel gave a piece of land in this valley to a widow Cloete. She had to travel between Stellenbosch and Riebeek Valley for supplies, a journey that took her more than a week in those days. One day on her return she found the house burned down and the farm destroyed. This is the story of "Allesverloren", birthplace of DF Malan.
Thanks to Pieter Cruythoff's discovery, this valley now houses many wine farms that produce award-winning wines.
Riebeek Cellars distributes a Pieter Cruythoff range of wines to honour his memory. This range is mostly for the export market.
