Aquila Private Game Reserve

"Depict as an eagle, Aquila is named for the bird that belonged to Zeus. Aquila's most famous task was carrying the mortal Ganymede to the heavens to serve as Zeus' cup bearer."

Aquila Private Game Reserve is situated in the beautiful Touwsriver area only 90 minutes from Cape Town.

After a welcome cocktail we've unpacked our luggage in our comfortable eco-country style cottage with en-suite bathroom.

Aquila offers self-drive packages, fly-in safaris, horseback safaris, as well as two-day safaris.

A ranger took us out with a 4x4 vehicle for our first game drive. It is an unbelievable experience to be so close to the animals in the veld. A White Rhino suddenly made his appearance.

A breathtaking sight!

Aquila is home to the endangered Black Eagle after which the Reserve has been named. While driving on we watched wild animal species such as Giraffe, Zebra, Springbok, Gemsbok, Ostrich and Wildebeest. On this 4 500-hectare reserve you will find 172 bird species.

Back at the Lodge we enjoyed an African buffet dinner. Huge log fires warmed the restaurant giving it a welcoming atmosphere.

The next morning rain was pouring down and it was terribly cold. We had a great breakfast before joining the ranger for our game drive. Blankets and raincoats were handed out to shield us from the icy cold Southern Karoo wind.

In the crisp morning air everything looked and smelled fresh. We drove down to a newly erected camp. Here in this 300-hectare enclosure, three Barbary lions are kept until their release into the Reserve.

Here at Aquila Private Game Reserve you can experience the beauty of the landscape. In this absolute tranquil environment you feel so close to nature.
