Hermanus is the Whale Capital of South Africa, offering the best land-based whale watching in the world, from May to December. Every year the wonder of hosting the visiting Southern Right whales is celebrated at the end of September/early October with the Whale Festival, celebrating art, music and culture. Hermanus is home to many artists, outstanding wine estates, including Hamilton Russell, special restaurants, and offers visitors a host of activities, including beautiful walks along the cliff paths or in the fynbos at Fernkloof Nature Reserve, horseriding, cycling, paragliding, sea kayaking, swimming at the beatiful beaches along Walker Bay and sailing. Shark cage diving has become hugely popular, and can be done from Gansbaai, the neighbouring town half an hour away.
